LLM Training Datasets

Open corpora and dataset tooling for pretraining and evaluation. Data quality and documentation matter as much as model architecture.

Why data matters as much as architecture

A language model learns almost everything it knows from its pretraining corpus, so the quality, filtering and documentation of that data decide a lot about the result. This category collects open corpora and the tools used to build them, with a focus on datasets you can actually download and inspect.

The web crawl at the bottom

Most large English pretraining sets start from Common Crawl, a nonprofit that maintains a free, open archive of web crawl data. Raw crawl text is noisy, so projects filter and deduplicate it. The FineWeb dataset card on Hugging Face, checked October 21, 2026, describes FineWeb as cleaned and deduplicated English web data from Common Crawl, covering dumps since 2013, released under the ODC By license, and the authors share the code to reproduce their processing. FineWeb Edu is a further filtered subset aimed at educational text and is a common choice for small training runs.

Other open corpora

  • Dolma from the Allen Institute for AI is the open pretraining corpus and toolkit used to train OLMo; its Hugging Face card lists the ODC By license.
  • LAION is a nonprofit that publishes open multimodal datasets, models and tools, mostly pairs of images and text.
  • TinyStories, a synthetic set of simple short stories, shows that very small models can learn fluent language when the data is narrow and clean.

Using these datasets in practice

The Hugging Face Datasets library (version 5.1.0 on PyPI as of October 21, 2026) streams most of these corpora without downloading them in full, which matters when a dataset runs to many terabytes. Before you train on anything, read its card: licenses, known gaps and filtering choices differ, and some datasets carry terms on top of the license that apply to the underlying web pages.

For a worked example of picking data and sizing a run, see our guide to training a small LLM from scratch, which compares TinyStories with a FineWeb Edu sample. If you plan to adapt an existing model instead, how to fine tune an LLM locally covers how much task data you need. Each dataset page below links to its official source.
